Windowspotting  |  2006 – today
An ongoing project

In the Netherlands it’s customary to decorate the windows of common houses. It is an integral part of the urban landscape and even a constituent of the national identity.
This phenomenon has firm roots in the Dutch history of house owning. Different from other European countries, nobility was absent for a long time here in the swampy low lands. The people who lived here build their own little sheds instead of finding shelter in big castles. Their houses may have been small, but they were home and owners wanted that to show. A typical Dutch tradition was born.
Boterenbrood documents the custom to this day.
